Leask Marine’s 5 man Civils Diving team complete 4 year project for Orkney Islands Council protecting pier from accelerated low water corrosion

Leask Marine’s Commercial Diving team are delighted to have completed a four-year contract from Orkney Islands Council to carry out a thickness survey of all the sheet piles, fitting of new anodes and repairs to the sheet piles on twenty-four of Orkney’s piers.

The team have work with and around all other pier and harbour stakeholders over this period. The works included some welding above the water line but mostly underwater welding and the custom-made repairs were made and over 2,000m of steel repair sections had been fitted.

On each pier all the pile in-pans had a new anode fitted by welding brackets to the pile which was designed for the conditions. During this time over 5,000 anodes varying in size from 25kg to 75kg were supplied and fitted to all the piers.

A second potential meter read survey was carried out to each pier 3 months following anode fitting to check they were working to protect the steel piles.
