Pre-Lay Grapnel Runs

Leask Marine provide Pre-Lay Grapnel Runs (PLGR), Out Of Service (OOS) Cable Recoveries, and boulder clearance as a standard subsea operation carried out before installing a subsea cable (such as power cables, telecom cables, or array/export cables for offshore wind farms).

Its main purpose is to clear the planned cable route ready for cable trenching and cable installation.

Leask Marine own a number of Grapnel Trains for recovering buried cables and clearing the seabed. It consists of a combination of Flatfish, Gillford, Rennie, and Spearpoint grapnels, and can be reconfigured to suit specific project requirements.

PLGR route is pre-programmed into Leask Marine’s vessel’s Eiva NaviPac Integrated Software that utilises integrated navigation and data acquisition software suited for all marine navigation and survey applications to enable precise execution.

The train can be integrated with a USBL transponder tracking system within a Stingray Acoustic Tow Line Positioning unit to monitor the grapnel precise route during operations.

Spearpoint Grapnel

Spearpoint Grapnels are used for various tasks, including salvaging, retrieving objects from the sea, and securing vessels temporarily. It is commonly used to Pre lay Grapnel Run, debris, and tangled equipment from underwater construction or maintenance.

Chain Grapnel

Leask Marine's chain Grapnel is a subsea tool designed for recovering chain anchors from seabed. It is designed for durability and effectiveness, having 4 prongs made of high-strength steel, which are shaped to hook into submerged objects such as chain links or debris. The grapnel is heavily weighted to ensure it sinks and digs effectively into the seabed, and its prong size and spacing are often tailored to suit the specific chain or object being recovered.

Acoustic Tow Line Positioning Grapnel

  • Constructed from high-strength steel, the Acoustic Tow Line Positioning Grapnel is engineered for reliable performance in demanding subsea conditions. Its design features a pivot mechanism that ensures the USBL beacon stays oriented toward the surface—even if the unit overturns—preserving communication integrity.

Features:

  • Manufactured from high strength structural steel
  • Two differing sizes of wide stabilisers to improve subsea stability
  • Welded plates for increased strength
  • Interchangeable mounting clamps with different subsea USBL beacons such as Sonadyne WSM 6+ Transponder

Applications:

  • PLGR (Pre Lay Grapnel Run)
  • De-trenching of buried subsea cables

Other Equipment

Leask Marine have a 60t Running Line Monitor that can be used for the PLGR operations.
