Leask Marine
Commercial Diving Services, Marine Construction and Boat Charter

Leask Marine started operations in 1985 to meet the demands of a construction program for new piers around the Inner and Outer North Isle in Orkney as well as Kirkwall Harbour, Stromness Harbour, Houton Terminal and Flotta. Today much of the maintenance and upgrading of these piers is still undertaken by Leask Marine, providing a long term program of operations ensuring continued care and upkeep of the piers. Skills required included; underwater burning & welding, shuttering, concreting, placement of pre-cast concrete units together with all the budget and man-management requirements prevalent in large construction projects.

Since then, Leask Marine have grown in strength and experience with a skills base wide enough to tackle any underwater task. The range of previous contracts ranges from scientific surveys, underwater inspection, construction to aquaculture. Two on going contracts illustrate this point:

  • Leask Marine have the biannual contract to clean and inspect the hulls for Orkney Ferries. This contract involves scrubbing the undersides of the hull prior to a full in-water video inspection as directed by a marine surveyor. This reduces the operational down time usually associated with re-fit whilst maintaining all legislative safety requirements. This operation has subsequently been scaled up to service the vessels of around 120,000 tons that anchor in Scapa Flow: the time and money saving benefits for the ship's operator are evident.
  • The summer of 2001 saw Leask Marine divers on the Royal Oak, part of a project to remove the residual oil from the wreck in an operation both technically involved and sensitive, due to the tragic circumstances involving her sinking. For more information please click here.
