In 2001 we completed, with compassion and dignity using our team of highly professional divers, the removal of excess fuel oil from HMS Royal Oak, a protected navel grave, in Scapa Flow. Leask Marine were contracted by Briggs Marine to provide a complete diving package for the, M.O.D Salvage & Mooring Organisation to assist in Hull Mapping and Hot tapping work as well as Oil recovery from the wreck and war grave of HMS Royal Oak. This project encompassed some major pre project commitment, involving risk assessments, procedures and technical issues, additionally our commitment proved a benefit to all involved in this operation where forward planning and success were key elements. This was the first time that the MOD had used a civilian diving contractor in a joint operation venture with a built in ability for the utilisation of MOD salvage divers if needed. This was regarded as an exercise for the future. In 2002 Leask Marine were again successful in tendering with Briggs Marine for further Hot tapping and oil recovery work on HMS Royal Oak, supplying 2 teams of divers providing 24 hr cover. This again was a very successful operation with the removal of 600 m ³ of heavy fuel oil, hence reducing the risk of catastrophic consequences to the local environment should the wreck collapse. In 2003 the contract to remove further oil from the H.M.S Royal Oak in Scapa Flow in collaboration with the M.O.D.involved employing two teams of divers (approx 10 per team) for the project. |
